What a combination!
The Pioneer Woman, Season 1, is now on Netflix. I have been watching it and getting some very good meal ideas and recipes. Yesterday, I made her Beef and Bean Burritos from Episode 13. They were very good. I used green enchila sauce with some tomato paste because I didn't have the sauce she used. I also used corn tortillas and love the flavor they gave it. I also put my leftover hamburger meat filling on top just to use it all.
I plan to accomplish today . . .
spend at least a couple of hours quilting
reading about gardening and hobby farms on my kindle
enjoy the beautiful few from the warmth of my den
package up some chicken breast that I had a friend get me from the Tyson chicken store
laundry
The only reason I am telling you this is that I hope if I write it down, I will actually do it.

Chicken and Brownies
Today I spent the afternoon packaging up half of the chicken. I put 13 packages in the freezer. Each package has a serving of 4 because we like to have leftovers for lunch the next day. I also canned 6 pints.
I ran across a recipe for Black Bean Brownies. Don't they look yummy.
The black beans take the place of flour and splenda or stevia takes the place of sugar. These are totally diabetic friendly. They are in the oven now. I sure hope they are good and don't disappoint us. I am trying to find desserts that Larry can eat. And we both are trying to have less flour in our diets.
One more day of school, then I have all summer free. We don't have a vacation planned. I think maybe we will visit a few places in Arkansas that we haven't been. Blanchard Springs Caverns. Clinton Library. Go back to Crystal Bridges and eat in the restaurant. I think I will check to see the concert lineup for Magic Springs. I'm thinking some day trips would be fun.
Well, I took the brownies out and I was disappointed. They are not sweet at all. I used splenda instead of stevia and don't think I used the correct conversion. I also think I left them in the oven too long. They seem to be kind of dry. But if I put some strawberry jam on them, they will be edible. And I do believe I will make them again using a different recipe. I have run across 3 or 4 of them. I think I'll also taste the batter to tweak it a little before I bake them.

Does it take
the rest of you as long to cut and sew on boarders as it does me. Becca and I spent most of the day putting the three boarders on this quilt.
It looks crinkly and wonky, but it isn't. A warm breeze was blowing. Well, you know how that goes.
I really meant to sew more later this evening but got lazy after I ate a light supper. I read a little, put a Netflix movie on, and read blogs. Before I know it, it will be time for bed.

I need some motivation
I think this evening is the first time I have been in the sewing room in a couple of weeks. I only stepped in longing enough to finishing sewing a couple of rows together to finish the quilt Becca is making for her brother.

Goodness, I took this photo with my eye phone and for some reason it sure is fuzzy.
Craig and Becca are coming tomorrow morning and we will add two or three borders to finish it up. Her granny is going to hand quilt it for her.
Hopefully, that will get me back in the groove. I am already about 3 weeks late on the baby quilt I need to make. And, of course, there are the many ideas floating around in my head. Oh, and there are at least 4 or 5 UFO's lying around waiting for me.

Perfect weather
for camping. It was unbelievably warm.
We went to a Corp of Engineer park by the Lock and Dam in Ozark. I do believe it has become my favorite park. Every campsite was level and large enough for any size RV. And all of the spots were easily accessible. Lots of shade, especially the area where we camped.
The weather was wonderful. Jackets in the morning with a cool breeze most of the afternoon. Larry pulled the 5th wheel and set up on Thursday afternoon. I had an easy drive to work on Friday. Saturday was beautiful. We were only a few miles from town so we had decided to take lunch meat and snacks and eat dinner out each evening. We went to a Thai restaurant on Thursday evening. Larry ran out for pizza on Friday evening and we sat around the campfire playing scrabble. Saturday evening we attended Mass and then ate at the local BBQ place. Delicious.

Hard at Work
You would think since it is Spring Break I would have plenty of time to post. But, here it is Thursday already and I feel like I haven't accomplished anything.
Monday was spent in Little Rock at the doctor's office. We left the house early enough to do some window shopping. We stopped by Pottery Barn. I love the stuff in there but it hurts to look at it -- if you know what I mean.
Then we wondered around the Williams Sonoma store and dreamed. Of course, not being much of a cook, I didn't even know what some of the gadgets were used for. But we saw a few things that we said, "One of these days".
On Tuesday and Wednesday, I got most of the quilting on Tiger Lily completed. I started to do some small stippling in the tiger lily blocks. I decided that it made the quilt too stiff and I was getting some puckering of the fabric. I think because of all of the spray starch used when I appliqued. (I may have to rethink using the spray starch method to applique.) So now I am taking the quilting out of that spot. I am glad it was only a partial block. The stitches are very small and I am having a hard time getting them out.
I have started what I hope to be the last baby quilt for awhile. I am using a Moda Bake Shop pattern called Baby Life by V and Co. Of course, I am personalizing it with the baby's name and stats.
My goal is to get both of these quilts completed before I go back to school next Monday. Then, I don't have any more deadline quilts. That I know of. lol
Well, the sun is shining this morning--after two days of nothing but rain. So, I hope to spend a little time enjoying the sunshine--whether reading a good book or working in the yard.

Callling AAA
Do any of you who travel belong to AAA auto club?
Several years ago. Larry had some training to go to in Little Rock (about 2 hours away). He was to stay a week. We decided that it would be more cost effective to pull of 5th wheel rv down and stay in a park than to stay a week in a hotel. We thought!!!!
On the way home from the trip his truck suddenly stopped . He hadn't been on the road for more than 20 minutes or so. So he called his brother-in-law to come pick up the RV and a wrecker to pick up the truck. The owner of the wrecker service is a good friend and recommended that we get enroll in one of the auto clubs. The one he was affiliated with was AAA. He said that with membership towing was free up to a certain distance. The little bill for towing the truck that far was right around $500.
A few summers ago, we decided to take a Spring Break vacation to Gulf Shores and pull the RV. So we enrolled in AAA before we went and added the RV protection plan. Well, thankfully, we didn't need to use it on that trip. When it was time to renew, we decided to keep it, just in case.
Fast forward to today. The phone rings and Larry says, "My truck just died and it will not start back." What to do? My immediate response was call AAA and I will come get you and bring you home to get Craig's truck. So I called work and explained that I would be late (Thank God for student teachers. I have one this semester.) I drove to almost Midway to pick up Larry. AAA said he had to stay there and wait for the tow truck. We really thought they would call our friend from Paris.
So I asked Larry if he could ride with the tow truck and I could go to work. Yes, that would work. So I traveled about a mile down the road and turned onto another road that took me the 3 miles I needed to go to get to Scranton. Isn't it nice to have more than one way to get to work.
I made it to work at my normal time. The truck was towed at no cost. Yippee. Larry was only an hour and a half late for work. ): And the mechanics haven't had time to figure out what is the problem with the truck. But they did say that after it had cooled down, they started it right up and drove it into the shop.
The worse part is that is was just in the shop last week and cost a fortune to get fixed. Not really a fortune, but a lot to us.
So I guess the question is, for those of you who travel quite frequently. Have you thought about an auto club?

Well, I finally sat down and put the first quilting stitches in "Snowbound" last night. I'm still not sure what I am going to do. Hopefully something will come to mind after I have "stitched in the ditch" around all of the blocks.
What a mess and company is coming!!!!!
My family has been coming to my house on New Year's Eve for the last 5 or 6 years. We usually eat soups and finger foods. Then we sit around and play Mexican Train Dominoes and/or just gab. Sometimes we also take turns playing video games. It is usually a house full of between 25 to 30 people.
So I spent part of the day yesterday picking up, etc. getting ready for company. If you do not have one of the new Shark Floor Steamers, I highly recommend it for tile or linoleum.
It is also safe to use on hardwood floors. I tried it on a small part of my wood laminate floors (about a 5 ft. by 3 ft. section) but the pad wasn't even dirty so I didn't use it on the rest.
The wood laminate we put down was from Sam's Club. We put it in last December. In all of that time, I have only used a dust mop from Walmart on it. Every once in a while I'll spray some pledge or something on the bottom of it to hold the dust instead of spreading it around. I've had a couple of spots (food spills) that I had to use a damp cloth, but other than that, I've not done anything to the floor. It is great.

Crazy Change in Plans
Thank you for all of the well wishes on the fun day I had planned, but it didn't happen.
My son walked out of the house to go to work. He really has a great job. He doesn't have to go in until 9:30. So with the hour drive, he does not have to get up early and he misses all of the 8 o'clock morning traffic.
Well, as I was saying, he walked out of the house this morning only to come back in in a few minutes. I asked him why he came back in and he said he had a flat tire. Totally flat. So out of the kindness of my heart (really necessity) I let him take my vehicle. Which stranded me until Larry got home at 9:30.
The sad thing is Craig has a truck he could drive but his dad had been driving it and he had called from work the other day and said it wouldn't start. Him and some of the guys push started it and he came home. The mechanic at his work thinks it is probably the starter. But because of doctor visits and work, we haven't ordered a new part. Now I know why I am so glad we usually have an extra vehicle around the house. I guess when Craig moves out, Larry and I will need to purchase a stand by vehicle to use in emergencies. It's nice just to jump in a different vehicle and deal with it when you do not have to be somewhere.
Where is all of this going? Well, my well laid out plans were totally blown. Which is actually probably good because I figure I saved a lot of money by not going to the quilt shops.
But the plans now are for Larry and I to go to Cracker Barrel to eat this evening and then to Cloth World and hopefully I will find some good quality red fabric. At this store, I always go by feel of the fabric. I found some I really liked there last Saturday and it felt very thin--so it stayed there.
But I had a good day. Here are the results . . .
The chocolate ones are off of the Toll House White Chips package and the others are Toll House chocolate chip cookies from the semi sweet chocolate chip package. I know the chocolate chip cookies are delicious because they always are. I've learned how to use a scant tsp. of soda and 1/4 cup less of flour to give me the gooey chewy cookies I like. Kelsey on the other hand likes them light and fluffy.
The cookie canisters are filled, kiddos. Hmm . . . Kelsey and Ismael that means you'll have to come see me. I have orange juice.
I tasted one of the chocolate cookies and they were very good but not quite the texture I like. I will definitely make them again with a few minor changes.
Well, I'm off to put binding on the two doll quilts I made for my great niece and then a nice leisurely evening out with Larry.

A Lazy Week
This week flew by. I don't think I made it to sew even once. I went to ball games three nights and basically just sat and read blogs and watched TV the other nights. What a life!
I spent most of the day today in Fort Smith finishing my shopping. The kids are older now so they basically know what they are getting this year. I was planning one gift to surprise Craig and who do you think I ran into when I had the gift in my cart. Yep, you bet. It was Craig. He said he heard me cough. I really need to get that fixed, don't I. So now, he'll just have to act surprised.
I really enjoyed shopping today. I just took my time and only went to a few stores that I really wanted to. I dropped by "Crackle Barrel" first thing to use the bathroom and look around. They had all of their Christmas 40% off. I don't think I've ever been there before at Christmas and didn't realize they had so many beautiful things. They had two sizes of acrylic deer that I really liked and each would be under $10. I planned to stop back by and get them after I checked another store and forgot. I have to go back to the doctor in Little Rock on Monday so maybe I'll remember to stop by the one in Russellville.
So no sewing this week, but it does look like Santa will be coming.
Plans are to sew tomorrow all day. Larry just remembered this morning that he is working an extra shift tomorrow. So it will be a slow Sunday with the kids popping in and out. And no work for two weeks. What a life!!!!

No Sewing Yesterday
Well, I forgot I had volunteered to wrap presents after school yesterday for the annual "Help our Kids" Christmas wrap. I teach in a small town of about 300 (give or take a few). We have a group that collects money and gifts to provide a Christmas for those students in our school whose parents need help during the holidays. There was a good crowd and it didn't take very long.
But then I went straight home, changed clothes, and Larry and I met Craig and Becca to eat. Then we headed out to the ballgame. And boy, was it a ball game.
The home team came out slow and cold missing a lot of their shots. But they came back after half time to tie at the end of the ballgame. They ended up winning in overtime. Congratulations to Ismael, Kelsey's boyfriend, high scorer of the game with 19 points.
The snowbound blocks are calling. Maybe I'll get to them tonight, if I don't go to another ball game. But that's okay--no deadlines--remember? lol

Good Friends and Food
I hosted the monthly teacher dinner at my house last night. We usually meet at a restaurant but Larry and I like to host at least one party each Christmas season.
There were a few good friends that did not make it, but those of us that were here had such a good time. We snacked on all kinds of food and then exchanged Christmas Ornaments playing "Dirty Santa". Larry and one of the other males that was here probably had the best time.
I was really aggravated because my pictures all turned out blurry. But, I am going to add one just because I don't like to have a post with no pictures.
Hmm. Maybe we were just a wild and crazy group.

Another Long Day!
I spent the day at the hospital in Little Rock again. I had a CT scan of my neck and throat at 12:30. Then I had a breathing test at 2:30 and met with my doctor at 3:00. The CT scan showed inflammation of the throat area right around the vocal chords. The doctors are baffled and cannot figure out what is causing the swelling. The breathing test showed that my breathing is a little better and I can tell. So the surgery to snip the tissue growth was successful.
But, not a clue why the spot in my throat is inflamed. So he is going to send my records (and me) to an ear, nose, and throat specialist and hope he has some answers. I really hope I can get in while I am off for Christmas break. It is really strange that my throat is inflamed and it does not hurt.
Meanwhile . . .
After I stitched in the ditch around the blocks of Baby Giuliana's quilt, I decided to cross hatch in the large center block. So I looked around the room for something to use to help me keep a pretty even (around a one inch) space between quilting rows. And this is what I found . . .

But, not a clue why the spot in my throat is inflamed. So he is going to send my records (and me) to an ear, nose, and throat specialist and hope he has some answers. I really hope I can get in while I am off for Christmas break. It is really strange that my throat is inflamed and it does not hurt.

Advice on Baby Quilt Needed
I am making this baby quilt and really love the fabrics I am using. Now I am trying to decide on borders for the quilt. I am just planning to add two or three strip borders. But, I'm not sure what fabrics to use. I don't have many fabrics to choose from. I have the pink and white plaid and the pink with large brown polka dots.
Now Craig says I should use simple borders and I think I agree. So I laid out the fabric with a solid pink for the first border to break up the plaids and polka dots.
I do hope I have enough of the brown with white polka dot for the binding.
Here's the top before it has been sewn together.
So what do you think I should do for borders. A solid, then the plaid, then the polka dot. Or the solid pink and then one of the other fabrics but not both?

Where Did Saturday Go?
I never made it to the sewing room yesterday. And . . . I have no idea where the day went.
I decided my hair was looking pretty shabby. Even Larry commented that it was time for a haircut. For the past year, I have been just going to the Walmart supercenter and walking in and it has been okay. But I haven't gotten that great haircut that I can always count on. So I chose a shop in town that has late hours and takes walk-ins. I know the owner and she has had the shop for a long time.
The girl doing my hair did a good job but she was new and to get a trim and waxing done, it took well over an hour. When I got back home, I realized that the group of teachers that meet once a month for dinner was meeting at my home on Saturday for a Christmas party. It's my fault -- I volunteered.
So I spent some time cleaning (it was more like piddling around) but did not accomplish very much. I need to spend some time today adding some decorations to my downstairs area and then maybe I'll get to the sewing room.
Since I don't like a post without pictures, I'll show you the Christmas wall hangings in my kitchen. The kitchen has high ceilings. So when people come they have to look up over the doorways to see the wall hangings. I took the pics from the floor so the colors are a little off because of the reflection from the red wall.
I used the top quilt as a tablecloth in the kitchen last year and I used the bottom quilt over a chair last year. The middle quilt was designed in EQ6 and finished this year.

Black Friday
Many years back, I started shopping on Black Friday. I would usually take Craig with me and Kelsey stayed home with her dad. Then the day after Christmas I would clearance shop and take Kelsey with me and leave Craig at home. It worked out really nice because I gave all of my attention to one child. We always had to travel 40 miles to the closest major city in order to get the good deals.
The past several years (since the kids are older and I don't have to shop for all those toy bargains) I have been able to shop at Walmart here in town and I just go by myself. One year I even sent Larry and Craig. Larry DID NOT enjoy it at all.
So this morning at midnight I was standing in line at the local Walmart waiting to check out. I do not really need any of the electronics so I did not need to get back out at 5 this morning.
Anyway on the way back home up the ridge, I saw the most beautiful falling star I have ever seen. It seemed so close and the star looked bright green with a white tail as it fell. It all seemed to be in slow motion. I immediately thanked the Good Lord for allowing me to see such a beautiful sight. What a great day to end a Thanksgiving day.
As for today, I am going to complete my decorating for Christmas, finish picking up the house, and then hit the sewing room. I have a couple of things I want to make the kids to decorate their homes and I have a couple of Christmas wall hangings to finish.
Just a snippet to show what I worked on yesterday.
The small stockings on top are for the cats. I didn't tell them I was making them and I knew Becca would get a kick out of them.
These were for Kelsey's dogs (mini pins). She didn't know I was making them either. I think she got a kick out of it too. It is fun to surprise them. Well, I'm off to bed.

Friday Night Sew In
The monthly Friday Night Sew In is scheduled for this Friday, November 19. I am really excited. I have been on a lazy kick since my last surgery and have not even been in my sewing room. I peeked in last night and, oh my goodness, it was so messy I backed back out and shut the door. lol

It's A Finish
. . . except for the label.
Putting labels on quilts is a habit I have not developed. In fact, of all the quilts I have made and given away, I have only put labels on two of them. The one I gave to Kelsey for Christmas a couple of years ago and the one I gave to Becca (Craig's girlfriend). I only put one on Becca's because she brought it back to me and demanded it.
Anyway, the latest baby quilt is complete. I left it very simple. And the label is machine embroidered and only needs sewed on. (I think I like machine embroidering them.) I guess because I can play as I design them.
Thanks to all of you who wished me well on my surgery. It's always nice to know there are people who care.

Successful Surgery
Well, the surgery went well. They were able to take a series of pictures of my throat and did not see any further blockage so I guess the first sugery where they snipped and took the biopsy worked.
They called in a Ears, Nose and Throat specialist from Children's Hospital (one of the best) and he assisted and took all of the pictures. After talking to him for about 10 minutes he was able to sum up exactly what I felt was happening in my throat. He also thinks, along with my UAMS doctor, that I have acid reflux without any of the normal pain that goes with it. He also asked if I had any food allergies. And when I told him I the symptoms were worse when eating creamy foods, he suggested milk. That is what I was afraid of, but I was allergy tested 6 years ago and only allergic to potatoes and dust mites. Do you know how many foods have milk products in them?
They are going to schedule me for a CAT scan of the neck and throat area to be sure there is not any other causes and then do a consultation for further treatment.
I feel like they are finally making some headway to my problems. I'm hoping that in another month, I'll have a treatment and be able to jog for a mile without problems.

Here We Go Again
Remember last month when I went to have a procedure done on my throat and they had to abort. Well, my doctor from UAMS called Friday afternoon. I was surprised when he called and not his nurse. But, I think it was because as he looked through my file he found out they had not called me within 72 hours of the last procedure to check on me and they had not called me to set up the followup surgery for 2 to 3 weeks.
After each procedure, the release orders say they will call me to reschedule, but so far they still haven't. I always end up calling them. I am no longer upset by this. It has just become the way it works. I keep telling Larry that I think they forget me.
Anyway he proceeded to tell me that the procedure would be this Wednesday morning--first thing. Which in this case meant be there at 5 a.m. Which means leaving home at 3:00 a.m. I am a little nervous but glad to have a date set and get it over with.
Say a prayer for me that everything is successful this time.
