A Question for those who Applique

Well, I have this eighth of the applique completed. It actually took longer than I thought it would.

I think it looks okay. I have a long way to go, but I don't think it will not take near as long as it would if I were doing hand applique.

So a question for all of you appliquers.

Do you cut out the backing fabric when you applique? Do you do this so they quilt is softer and not as puffy?

Oh jeez, it's bed time.

Happy snipping, stitching, and quilting!

  1. I don't cut away although I do know some who do. I just don't see the need and I feel that it looks ok without. I can see it if there are multiple layers of fabric. I do all hand applique never got into machine applique. It might take a little longer but it is more portable

  2. I cut away so that it is less layers to quilt through so I can add some detail to flowers ect with hand quilting - it also makes it less puffy at the sametime.

  3. I don't cut away either, but I don't machine applique'. I know there is a definite difference in the same quilt that is machine pieced and hand pieced. The machine pieced is a lot heavier so maybe it would be easier to quilt if you did cut away. I know people that do both. Whatever you decide it is going to be a beauty!

  4. I don't cut away. But my work is machine quilted. It might be difficult to hand quilt through multiple layers. I guess it would depend on how you were planning to quilt the applique. If you are just going to go around the outside of the pieces, and then do cross hatching in the back ground, I wouldn't cut away.

  5. I have a lot of friends who cut that back fabric out Vivian but I don't. I think if you're hand quilting it that would be a good idea but most of my quilts, well really all of them lately, are machine quilted, so the thickness isn't a problem. blessings, marlene
